A little of Everything Crazy, 100% everything Me
The original post reminded me of my abnormal psychology class. I came into class excited to finally learn what is wrong with me and everyone I know. After having the knowledge of this class behind me, I thought, I would have all the answers simply and clearly. I spent the first half of the semester collecting excitement for every group of disorders to be studied in each following lecture only to be disappointed that nothing is as simple as I thought. Not only did setting up hypothetical diagnosis’ in my head not relieve me of the tension caused by my curiosity, it opened up other questions that could not be answered with hypothetical scenarios. Moreover, as the semester went by my list of my disorders grew shorter and shorter until it became blank. I was outraged that I was in fact completely normal,as it turned out, and the minds of people in my life still remained a mystery to everyone including themselves. How could that be? The things I experience, feel and think. How could I be normal.
By the end of the semester, I came to appreciate that little of the true potential of our minds and brains is known. Contrary to my initial reaction, I now consider myself lucky to be normal and now even more motivated to study something that holds the answers to my questions: the brain. Now I see that the beauty of life is not always beautiful so to speak. In fact it is the ugly experiences and what we take from them that make it so. That is in fact normalcy.
